19th Century Carved Stone Waterloo Bridge Baluster Sundial
Stock Number: 4015Early 19th Century Carved stone baluster reclaimed from the old Waterloo Bridge in 1934, with 20th Century naturally verdigris sundial plate (not fixed) Originally designed by John Rennie, the original Waterloo Bridge was demolished in 1934 to make way for the current creation designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Much of the stone from the original bridge was reclaimed and reused in the UK and across the Commonwealth. London City Council sold the balusters direct from the site for the princely sum of £1. They do occasionally appear on the market having been used in gardens and residences as statue columns and as with this example sundials. Circa 1800 England.
