Votive Ship Model

Early 19th century French votive model ship. Naïve in construction and decoration. The hull carved from a single solid piece of French oak. The figurehead on the prow is a separate piece, depicting a prowling cat with remnant paint. There is evidence of drying cracks to the rear of the hull, these are however secure. Votive ships or Church ships are displayed (often hung) in Churches, made generally by seamen and sailors after escaping a shipwreck or perilous nautical situation Wear is consistent with age and use. French Circa 1830
